About

David McAtee was the youngest child of Odessa Riley and James McAtee and had eight siblings. He owned and operated YaYa’s BBQ Shack in Louisville's predominantly black west end neighborhood. He had a reputation for generosity. At the time of the shooting, he was reportedly in a crowd not part of the protests going on at the time, but instead part of a weekly social event.

David McAtee was fatally shot by the Kentucky Army National Guard in Louisville during protests over the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The National Guard and Louisville metro police department (LMPD) were there to enforce a curfew. According to officials, the National Guard and the LMPD were fired on by McAtee and they returned fire. McAtee was killed by a shot from the National Guard.

Was justice served?

As of February, 2021, no justice has been served. Investigation is still pending. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against LMPD and the National Guard, also yet to go to court. The LMPD police chief was fired, however, over the shooting.
