Born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Ms. Crystal Ragland was heavily involved in her faith throughout her adolescence and adult life, becoming a member of Union Hill P.B. Church and eventually Eagle's Nest Ministries Church. After graduating from J.O. Johnson high school, Ragland enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served until being medically discharged in 2012. Ms. Ragland had a mother, six siblings, three nieces, five nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
At around 9 a.m. on May 30th, 2019, someone called the Hunstville, Alabama police on Ms. Ragland, a veteran with documented mental health conditions, after she was allegedly waving a gun around at her apartment complex. Neighbors interviewed later said that they did not see her holding a gun. Two police officers arrived and, after a brief verbal exchange with Ms. Ragland, fatally shot her.
Was justice served?
As of February 2021, justice has not been served. After shooting Ms. Ragland, the officers involved were put on administrative duty while the case was investigated by an incident review board. After investigation, it was determined by the board that the officers were not guilty.
