About
Ahmaud Arbery was born and raised in Brunswick, GA. He graduated from Brunswick High School in 2012. He attended South Georgia Technical College to train for a career as an Electrician. He is survived by his mother, father, his brother and sister, many extended family members, and loving friends. Family and friends describe Ahmaud (nicknamed "Maud" by some) as humble, hardworking, and loyal. He loved sports, especially Football and Baseball, and always wore the number 21 on his jersey, which was passed down to him from his older brother. Friends said Ahmaud would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, and had a smile that lit up the room.
Ahmaud Arbery was killed while jogging through his neighborhood when two white men, 34-year-old Travis McMichael, and his father, 64-year-old Gregory McMichael, attacked him with a shotgun. A video of the incident was recorded by William "Roddie" Bryan, a neighbor of the McMichaels, using his cellphone from his vehicle as he followed Arbery jogging down the neighborhood road. The men later claimed that they thought he was a “suspect” linked to recent neighborhood break-ins, but additional investigation revealed a pattern of racist speech and ideology from both the McMichaels and William Bryan.
Was justice served?
As of March 31, 2021, justice is still unserved. After a video of the killing of Ahmaud Arbery was released and went viral on social media, Georgia law officials arrested Gregory and Travis McMichael. Days later, William "Roddie" Bryan was also arrested. All three men have been charged with felony murder. At a hearing in June 2020, the men pleaded not guilty, and were denied bond. A hearing on their case is set for May 2021. Due to the brutal nature of Ahmaud's murder, and the defendants' deep ties to law enforcement, the case has gained national attention.
